Getting back to "normal" post-pandemic?

Published on 1 June 2023 at 10:05

The COVID-19 pandemic has undoubtedly been a challenging time for everyone. As we approach a return to some semblance of normality, many people find themselves struggling with the transition. After years of social distancing, mask-wearing, and lockdowns, it's not surprising that some individuals are having a difficult time adjusting to life post-pandemic.

As a counselor and life coach, I've seen firsthand the toll that the pandemic has taken on people's mental health. In this article, I want to address the common issue of people who don't know how to get back to their normal lives after the pandemic. I'll provide some tips and insights that may help ease the transition and support your mental wellbeing.

First and foremost, it's important to acknowledge that what we're experiencing is not a return to normal. Life after the pandemic will likely look different from what we've become accustomed to. There may be changes in the way we interact with others, the way we work, and the way we spend our leisure time. Acknowledging this reality can help us avoid disappointment and manage our expectations.

It's also essential to recognize that everyone's journey back to "normal" will look different. Some people may be eager to resume their pre-pandemic activities, while others may feel hesitant or anxious. It's okay to take things at your own pace and to prioritize your mental health and wellbeing above everything else.

One helpful strategy is to focus on building resilience. Resilience is the ability to adapt to change, cope with stress, and bounce back from adversity. Resilience can be strengthened through practices like mindfulness, gratitude, and self-care. Mindfulness can help you stay present and grounded in the moment, while gratitude can help you cultivate a positive outlook and appreciation for the good things in your life. Self-care can involve anything from exercise and healthy eating to engaging in hobbies and activities that bring you joy.

Another strategy is to be intentional about setting boundaries. After years of social distancing, some people may feel pressure to jump back into social activities and commitments. However, it's essential to be mindful of your own needs and to set boundaries that support your mental wellbeing. This may mean saying no to certain invitations or prioritizing alone time to recharge.

As I always say, it's important to seek support when you need it. If you're struggling with anxiety, depression, or any other mental health concerns, don't hesitate to reach out to a mental health professional or support group. Seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness, and can provide you with the tools and resources you need to navigate this challenging time.

I too have struggled with the transition back to "normal" life after the pandemic. While I've always valued self-care and mindfulness, I've found that the past year has taken a toll on my mental wellbeing. Even as restrictions lift, I've still felt anxious and hesitant about returning to certain activities and commitments. However, I've also learned that it's okay to take things at my own pace and to prioritize my mental health above all else.

By setting boundaries, practicing self-care, and seeking support when needed, I've been able to navigate this challenging time with more grace and resilience. I'm still not there yet, but I am taking it one step at a time and that's enough for now.

As a counselor and life coach, I am here to support my clients as they navigate the transition back to "normal" life after the pandemic. My role is to provide a safe and non-judgmental space where clients can explore their feelings and concerns, and develop strategies for managing stress and anxiety. Through active listening, empathy, and evidence-based techniques, I can help clients build resilience, set boundaries, and develop healthy coping mechanisms that support their mental wellbeing. By working together, we can identify areas of growth and opportunity, and create a plan for achieving their goals. Whether it's through one-on-one coaching sessions or group support, I am committed to helping my clients thrive in the face of adversity.
