Controlling parents: the pressure and the consequences

Having a controlling parent can have a significant impact on a person's mental health and overall well-being. The constant pressure to meet their expectations and follow their rules can cause feelings of anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. In this post, we will discuss the negative effects of having a controlling parent and how seeking help from a coach or counselor can be beneficial in this situation.

The common effects of having a controlling parents:

One of the most common effects of having a controlling parent is the development of a fear of failure. Children with controlling parents are often raised to believe that anything less than perfection is unacceptable, and that any mistake will result in punishment or criticism. This can lead to a constant fear of failure, which can manifest as anxiety or even a paralyzing fear of taking risks.

In addition to fear of failure, having a controlling parent can also lead to feelings of low self-esteem. Children who are constantly told what to do and how to do it may struggle to develop their own sense of identity and autonomy. This can cause them to doubt their abilities and feel insecure about themselves.

Another negative effect of having a controlling parent is the development of a strained relationship with them. Children may feel resentful towards their parent for not allowing them to make their own choices and for being overly critical. This can lead to a breakdown in communication and a lack of trust between parent and child.

Fortunately seeking help from a coach or counselor can be beneficial in addressing the negative effects of having a controlling parent. A coach or counselor can provide a safe and non-judgmental space for (adult) children to express their feelings and concerns. They can also help them develop strategies for coping with their parent's behavior, such as setting boundaries or learning how to communicate effectively, as well as develop a sense of self-worth and confidence.

If you have a controlling parent and you feel the pressure to do more and achieve more than you are willing to, do not hesitate to seek help.
