The difference between coaching and counseling (short answer)

Some of the frequently asked questions about our services are:

what is the difference between counseling and coaching?

Or:

which one should I choose? I don’t know if I need counseling or coaching.

To explain all the differences between coaching and counseling, I’ll probably need 2 full pages.

The short answer to this question is:

As your counselor, I will be guiding and advising you about the “why” part of your problem. While as your coach, I will be teaching you about the “how” part of your problem. So, you choose counseling if you need guidance about your “emotional” subjects, and you choose coaching if you need to learn how to achieve your goal.

Let me explain this further.

Coaches and counselors both focus on helping people and make use of similar interpersonal communication skills. Both provide solutions to get you closer to the life you want to be living.

Coaches are trained in supporting clients to progress in life, while counselors are trained in human development.

Coaches help people achieve their goals, while counselors help you identify problems and act as a solid support system to assist you in gaining strength.

Coaching focuses on the “how” to get out of the problem, counselors work on the “why” part of the problem.

So, how do we choose the right method for you?

It’s important to note that both coaches and counselors work on specific goals and changes. There is much overlap between the two approaches, and the goals you have for yourself will typically determine whether you would benefit from counseling or coaching.
